OVERVIEW
The Intel¨ Education Viewer (IEV) application enables you to access Intel¨ Education course materials on your computer. The materials have been customized to accommodate the ViewerŐs interface and online capabilities. Using the Viewer, you will find that you can easily scroll through the content, search for specific concepts and terms, access course resources, open the Intel¨ Education Help Guide skills, look up glossary terms, record notes, and more.
To open the Viewer, copy or install the application onto your computerŐs hard drive. Then, double-click the course or IEV icon, which looks like an open book. Note that you can install a Windows, Mac, or Linux Viewer. Make sure you install the version developed for your operating system.
The Welcome page opens when you launch the Viewer. By default, the Manual tab is active and shows the list of Modules in the course. Understanding the interface is fundamental to successfully using the Viewer to complete the course. The following image and bulleted list describes the main parts of the interface.
á Breadcrumb area: This area displays the current module, activity, and step in row view so you can quickly identify which section you are viewing in the course.
á Change Picture link: This link enables you to replace the default title page picture with a custom picture. For more information about changing the picture on the title page, see the Change Picture section in this user manual. After you change the picture, you can click the Reset Picture link to revert to the default picture.
á Contents: The left navigation pane shows the contents of the tab you are viewing. You can click content links to go directly to a selection, such as a module on the Manual tab or Help Guide skill on the Help Guide tab.
á Menu bar: Located below the title bar, the menu bar provides access to the File, View, Bookmark, and Help menus.
á Next: The Next button enables you to view the next page in a module.
á Previous: The Previous button enables you to view the preceding page in a module.
á Search tool: The Search tool allows you to search for specific text in a module. For more information about the Search tool, see the Search section in this user manual.
á Slider: The slider enables you to navigate between pages more quickly than using the Next and Previous buttons. Drag the slider left or right to view module pages. Notice the breadcrumbs below the slider change to match the slider location.
á Tabs: Below the toolbar is a Components Panel containing three tabs—Manual, Help Guide, and Resources. Click a tab to access the corresponding content. For more information about the tabs and Components Panel, see the Components Panel section in this user manual.
á Title bar: The title bar includes a small book icon and book title to indicate which course is currently loaded in the Viewer.
á Toolbar: The toolbar contains the Back, Hide TOC, Open, Save, and Print buttons along with Comment, Bookmark, and Highlight buttons. For more information about comments, bookmarks, and highlights, see the User Actions section in this user manual.
When navigating online, the quickest way to find content is to conduct a search. To search for content in the Viewer, type the keyword in the Find box, and click Go.
The first instance of the text you searched for will be highlighted in the main content area, as shown in the following image. Continue to click the Go button to see additional instances of the search term.
The title page picture can be changed to a custom image in your Viewer. To change the picture, follow these steps:
1. Click the Change Picture link below the image on the Welcome page to open the Change Image dialog box.
2. Navigate to the location of the picture you want to insert.
3. Click the picture name, and then click Change Image.
The selected picture replaces the default title page image. After the picture has been changed, you can revert to the original title page picture by clicking the Reset Picture link, which appears to the right of the Change Picture link.
The Components Panel is the tab area. The tabs included in the Viewer are Manual, Help Guide, and Resources. When you click a tab, the view changes in both the left navigation pane and the main content area. The following sections provide a summary of each tab.
When you click the Manual tab, a list of main sections (generally modules) appears in the left navigation pane showing the course contents. To expand a main section and view subsections, click the arrow next to the sectionŐs name.
After you expand a section, you can click any subtopic to view the corresponding content in the main content pane, as shown in the following image.
The Help Guide tab displays a list of technology areas, such as graphics, word processing, multimedia, Web technologies, and so forth. The Help Guide skills available on this tab are the same skills available online from the Intel¨ Education Help Guide. You use the Help Guide in the Viewer in the same manner you use the online Help Guide:
1. In the Viewer, click the Help Guide tab in the Components Panel.
2. In the Help Guide contents area, click a technology group to view the skill groups.
3. Click a skill group to view the available skills.
4. Click the skill you want to explore to see the illustrated steps in the main content area.
The following image shows what you would see if you clicked the Help Guide tab, clicked the Help Guide technology group, clicked 1. Finding Technology Skills skills group, and then clicked the 1.1 To find a skill in the left navigation pane skill.
The Help Guide steps and illustrations appear in two columns in the main content area of the Viewer window. The procedural steps are in the left column, and illustrations are in the right column. You can change the width of the columns by dragging the column separator left or right. You can use the scroll bar to move up or down through the steps.
When you click a step number, the stepŐs details display in a pop-up window. By default, the pop-up window remains on top of any other open application. If you drag the pop-up window to a new location, the position is retained when the pop-up window is launched the next time.
Help Guide Search
The Help Guide tab includes a Search text box in the navigation pane that you can use to search for specific text in the Help Guide skills. To use the Search box, type the text you want to find in Search text box and then click Go.
Your search results will be organized by technology group in the navigation pane, as shown in the following image. Scroll through the results to and click the skill relevant to your needs.
To reset the Help Guide contents area, click the Reset Menu button in the top left corner of the navigation pane. Notice the current search criteria appears to the left of the Reset Menu button.
The Resources tab in the Components Panel provides links to the course materials. Click a resource topic to expand the group. Then, click a resource link to open the resource in a separate window, as shown in the following image.
The main file operations are accessible on the File menu,
as shown in the following image. The File menu includes the Open, Save, Save
AsÉ, Print Module, Print Notes, Select Help Guide Version, and Exit options.
The File menu is available when any of the tabs (Manual, Help Guide, or
Resources) are active, but some File menu options are only available when the
Manual tab is active.
You use the Open command on the File menu to restore the Viewer settings you saved during a previous session (to learn how to save your Viewer settings, see the Save Settings section in this user manual). When you open saved settings, the Viewer automatically returns your view to the location where you last saved, and restores your bookmarks, notes, user input (such as the text you typed in text boxes), highlights, and so forth. To open saved settings:
1. Click the Manual tab if you are in the Help Guide or Resources view.
2. Click File on the menu bar, and then click Open.
3. In the Open File dialog box, select the ZIP file that contains your saved settings, and click Open File. The settings are applied automatically to the current session.
The Save command lets you save your work and Viewer settings from one session to another. When you save your settings, the Viewer creates a ZIP file. When you reopen the Viewer after you saved your settings in a previous session, you can open the ZIP file to reinstall your saved settings. Saved settings include the current view you are in when you saved (such as a specific step in an activity) as well as your bookmarks, notes, user input, highlights, and so forth. To save your settings:
1. Click the Manual tab if you are in the Help Guide or Resources view.
2. Click File on the menu bar, and then click Save.
3. In the Save File dialog box, navigate to the location where you want to save the ZIP file, enter a name for the file in the File name text box, and click Save File.
Note: The Save File dialog box only opens the first time you click the Save command. Clicking Save after you saved the settings once replaces the existing settings (similar to saving a word processing document that has already been saved once). To save settings in a new ZIP file without replacing the existing ZIP file, use the Save As command, which is described in the next section of this user manual.
The Save As command on the File menu allows you to save your current Viewer settings, including your location and user data, bookmarks, and other customizations you have made in a manual (see the Save Settings section and Open Settings section in this user manual for more information about saving and opening Viewer settings). To use the Save As command:
1. Click the Manual tab if you are in the Help Guide or Resources view.
2. Click File on the menu bar, and then click Save As.
3. In the Save File dialog box, navigate to the location where you want to save the ZIP file, enter a name for the file in the File name text box, and click Save File.
The Print Module command on the File menu opens the current module as a PDF file in your default PDF viewer. You can then print the PDF file. To open a module as a PDF file:
1. Click the Manual tab if you are in the Help Guide or Resources view.
2. Click File on the menu bar, and then click Print Module.
3. After the module opens in the PDF reader, click the Print button on the readerŐs toolbar.
Note: You must have Adobe* Reader (www.adobe.com) installed on your computer to view and print the PDF file.
The Print Notes command on the File menu displays an HTML file containing the notes a user has typed in a module. The user input appears in separate boxes labeled with the module content associate with the user input, as shown in the following image. The Print Notes command also includes any notes the user has made in the My Notes section of the Viewer. To print all user input and notes associated with a module:
1. Click the Manual tab if you are in the Help Guide or Resources view.
2. Click File on the menu bar, and then click Print Notes.
3. After your notes appear in your browser window, click File in the browser menu bar, and click Print.
When you log in
to the online Help Guide, you specify
which Help Guide version you want to
use. You can specify a Help Guide
version in the Viewer as well. By
specifying a Help Guide version, you
ensure that the steps you see in skills match the software you are using on
your computer. To select a Help Guide
version in the Viewer:
1. Click the Manual tab if you are in the Help Guide or Resources view.
2. Click File on the menu bar, and then click Select Help Guide Version to open the Select Help Guide Version dialog box.
3. Click the radio button next to the Help Guide version that corresponds with your software, and then click OK. (Note: Clicking Cancel closes the Select Help Guide Version dialog box without applying a selection.)
The selected
version of the Help Guide will now be
shown in the Help Guide tab in your Viewer.
The Exit command on the File menu closes the Viewer application. Before you exit, remember to save your settings if you want to return to the current location and have your user input, notes, highlights, and bookmarks available during your next session.
To close the Viewer, click File, click Exit, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to close the application.
The View menu is available only when the Manual tab is selected in the Viewer (the View menu is gray when the Help Guide or Resources tab is selected). The View menu contains commands that help you control navigation and display settings while you view a manual. The available commands include Show/Hide TOC, Goto, Show/Hide My Notes, Make Text Larger, and Make Text Smaller.
The View menu includes a toggle option that enables you to Show TOC (table of contents) or Hide TOC when the Manual tab is selected. By default, the contents displays in the navigation pane, so the View menu will show Hide TOC. If you click Hide TOC on the View menu, the contents will be hidden. To display the contents again, click View and then click Show TOC. You can also show or hide the contents in the navigation pane by clicking Show/Hide TOC button in the toolbar.
The Goto command on the View menu enables you change the view to show the next or previous module. Note that this feature does not move you to the next or previous step or activity—it specifically moves between modules. To use the Goto options, make sure the Manual tab is active in the Viewer, and then:
á To display the next module, click View, click Goto, and then click Next Topic.
á To move to the previous module, click View, click Goto, and then click Previous Topic.
The Show My Notes command on the View menu displays an HTML file containing the notes a user has typed in a module. The user input appears in separate boxes labeled with the module content associate with the user input, as shown in the following image. The Show My Notes command also includes any notes the user has made in the My Notes section of the Viewer. To print all user input and notes associated with a module:
1. Click the Manual tab if you are in the Help Guide or Resources view.
2. Click View on the menu bar, and then click Show My Notes.
3. After your notes appear in your browser window, click File in the browser menu bar, and click Print.
When the Manual tab is selected, the View menu provides access to two text formatting options that enable you to make the Viewer text larger or smaller in the main content area. While the option is only available when the Manual tab is selected, the larger and smaller settings adjust the text size on both the Manual and Resources tabs. (Note: The text size on the User Input boxes on the Manual tab and text on the Help Guide tab are not changed.)
To change the font size of text in the Viewer:
1. Click the Manual tab.
2. Click View on the menu bar, and then:
á Click Make Text Larger to increase the font size.
á Click Make Text Smaller to decrease the font size.
3. Repeat step 2 as many times as necessary to further increase or decrease the font size to the desired size.
Your text size setting will be stored in your settings ZIP file if you save your settings before you close the Viewer. For more information about saving your Viewer settings, see the Save Settings section in this user manual.
When you work with content in the Manual tab, you can add comments and bookmarks, highlight text, specify highlighting colors, and type in text boxes and text areas. To add and delete comments, bookmarks, and highlighting, you use the following toolbar buttons:
The toolbar button names, in order, are:
Add Comment
Edit Comment
Remove Comment
Add Bookmark
Remove Bookmark
Add Highlight
Remove Highlight
Highlight Color Palette
You can use the toolbar buttons to add comments directly in the main course content area on the Manual tab. You can add, edit, and remove comments.
You can add comments to content whenever you are reviewing text on the Manual tab. Comments you add can be hidden or shown embedded in the text (for more information about showing and hiding comments, see the Show My Notes section in this user manual). To add a comment in the main content area in the Viewer, make sure the Manual tab is active, and then complete the following steps:
1. Select the text that you want to associate with your comment. Please be sure not to highlight any text that is in italics, bold, includes links, or contains bullet graphics from a list.
2. Click the Add Comment button. A blank comment box opens.
3. Click in the comment box and type your comment.
4. Click Save. (Clicking Cancel closes the comment box without adding a comment.)
The text you selected to be associated with the comment displays as red underlined text. If you point to the text, the pop-up comment box opens. Move your mouse pointer to close the pop-up comment box.
To show your comments, click View in the menu bar, and then click Show My Notes.
Any notes you add during a session will be removed when you close the Viewer unless you save your settings. For more information about saving your notes, see the Save Settings section in this user manual.
You can edit comments after you create them by following these steps:
1. Select the red underlined text associated with the comment you want to edit.
2. Click the Edit Comment button on the toolbar.
3. Modify the comment text as needed.
4. Click Save.
You can remove any comments you have added. You might find this capability useful if you add temporary comments as reminders to yourself. To remove a comment:
1. Select the red underlined text associated with the comment you want to remove.
2. Click the Remove Comment button.
The red underlined formatting is removed from the text and the comment is deleted.
A bookmark tags the specific location of a particular piece of information in a module. You can add bookmarks so you can easily return to content later. Like notes, any bookmarks you add during a session will be removed when you close the Viewer unless you save your settings.
Note: For more information about saving your bookmarks, see the Save Settings section in this user manual.
By default, when you add a bookmark, it remains available until you close the Viewer. If you save your settings before you close the Viewer, your bookmarks will be saved in your settings ZIP file, and you will be able to use your bookmarks in future sessions in which you load your saved settings ZIP file.
To add a bookmark:
1. Select the text you want to associate with a bookmark. This text will appear highlighted in the manual as well as display as the Bookmark name in the Bookmark menu.
2. Click the Add Bookmark button in the context toolbar.
The text associated with the book is highlighted, and the bookmark is added to the Bookmark menu. The following image shows three bookmarks highlighted in the content area and listed on the Bookmark menu.
You can remove bookmarks you have added. When you remove a bookmark, you remove the highlighting applied to the bookmarked text in the content area as well as remove the menu item on the Bookmarks menu. To remove a bookmark:
1. In the main content area, click the bookmark text.
2. Click the Remove Bookmark button in the toolbar.
Highlighting text brings content to your attention when you return to information you have already reviewed. You can highlight content in the Viewer in the same way you highlight content in other documents or books. In the Viewer, you can add and remove highlighting using a color you choose from a color palette. Note that the highlighting tool is only available in the Manual tab (not the Help Guide and Resources tab).
When you add highlighting to content, the highlighting only applies to the current session unless you save your settings before you exit the Viewer. (For more information about saving your bookmarks, see the Save Settings section in this user manual.) To highlight content displayed in the main content area on the Manual tab:
1. Select the text you want to highlight.
2. Click the Highlight Tex button on the toolbar to highlight the text in the color shown on the Color Palette button.
To remove highlighting applied to content on the Manual tab:
1. Click in the line that contains the highlighted text to remove all highlighting from the line. (Note: To remove highlighting from multiple lines of text at once, select the lines of text.)
2. Click the Remove Highlight button on the toolbar.
When you set a highlighting color on the color palette, the color selection only applies to the current session unless you save your settings before you exit the Viewer. (For more information about saving your bookmarks, see the Save Settings section in this user manual.) To select a highlight color:
1. Click the Highlight Color Palette button on the toolbar.
2. Click a color swatch on the palette.
The next time you highlight text, the newly assigned color will be used.
Throughout a course, you will find simple text boxes on the Manual tab that enable you to type text directly into the content area. Simple text boxes allow text only—you cannot format the text you type in these boxes—and can be single or multiple line boxes. To save text you enter from one session to the next, save your settings before you close the Viewer. For more information about saving your input, see the Save Settings section in this manual. The following image shows a text box embedded in an activity step.
A Text Area element is similar to a Text Box element (see the Text Box section in this user manual) except that you can format the content in a Text Area. You can recognize a Text Area element because the box displays with a formatting toolbar, as shown in the following image.
The toolbar contains standard formatting tools, similar to the tools you use in word processing programs, including:
Font
Font Size
Bold
Italic
Underline
Font color
Left align
Center align
Right align
Justify Alignment
Bulleted List
Insert Hyperlink
Note: You must select text in the Text Area before you can
format it as a hyperlink.
The Help menu on the menu bar contains three options:
á Help: Opens the user manual in a browser window.
á About: Displays the Viewer version number.
The Help menu is accessible when you are in any tab view, including Manual, Help Guide, and Resources.
