1) Firmware upgrade requires the expander connected to proper Intel(R) SAS/RAID Host Bus Adapter (HBA), see below for the HBA compatibility list.

On-board SAS Controller Compatibilty:
On-board SATA/SAS Capable Controller based on Intel(R) C600 chipset in Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology enterprise (RSTe) mode. SAS feautre needs be be enabled by proper Intel(R) RAID C600 upgrade keys.

2) Firmware upgrade also requires proper operating system to perform.
Firmware upgrade through SAS host bus adapter is supported under Windows, Linux, and UEFI (EFI 2.0).
