INTEL WIRELESS ETHERNET ACCESS POINT Software Release Version 4.00 September 27, 2001 Thank you for purchasing your Intel Wireless Ethernet Access Point. The software in this release is compatible with the following Intel products: Product Name Model Number ------------ ------------ Wireless Ethernet Access Point APWE1100 Series Contents -------- 1) Overview 2) What's New In The 4.00 Software Release 3) Release Notes/Known Limitations 4) Technical Support 1) OVERVIEW ======== The Intel Wireless Ethernet Access Point, when used with Intel Wireless Ethernet Adapters or other 802.11b-compliant wireless Ethernet adapters, offers an easy and economical way to add secure wireless connectivity to a wired local area network (LAN) within a building or office. Intel Wireless Ethernet Access Points conform to the IEEE 802.11b specification, which supports roaming, remote management, and speeds up to 11 Mbps over secure and reliable connections. 2) WHAT'S NEW IN THE 4.00 SOFTWARE RELEASE ======================================= -Support for 128-bit WEP encryption has been included with this release. -Use of Web-based Access Point management tools is now included. -A condition in which Access Points were unable to obtain an IP address from certain DHCP services has been corrected. 3) RELEASE NOTES/KNOWN LIMITATIONS =============================== -This release of the Access Point supports both 40 bit and 128 bit WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) encryption. -In order to configure the Access Point via the KickStart utility, it must be connected to the network via a wired connection (using the RJ45 connector). The Access Point cannot be configured via a wireless connection. -In order for Access Points to be recognized by the Scan function, they must be connected on the same ethernet segment and subnet as the computer which is running the software. Access Points located on a different segment or subnet will not be discovered. -For two or more Access Points to support roaming they must be connected to the same ethernet segment and subnet. They must also use the same Network ID, and if WEP is enabled, the same WEP keys. -The Access Point IP address settings are configured via the KickStart utility. The address can be configured to use either Dynamic IP (DHCP) or Static IP. Once configured, a change from dynamic to static (or vice versa) will require relaunch of the KickStart utility. -IP address settings must be configured via the KickStart utility. These settings cannot be changed directly via the web interface. -In a static IP environment, it is necessary to select the "Use static IP settings" option (KickStart will still present an option to use Dynamic IP). Attempting to use dynamic settings in an environment where no DHCP server is present will result in an inability to configure the Access Point IP settings. -Access Points that have just been reset may not be immediately picked up when the scan function is run. If Access Points are not being detected, it is recommended to wait 1-3 minutes and then relaunch the KickStart utility, or alternatively reboot the computer on which KickStart is being run. -This software release allows the Access Point to run in autorate mode. It does not provide a means to force the Access Point speed to 11, 5.5, 2 or 1 mbps. In order for clients to connect successfully they will need to be configured for autorate connections. Clients using forced speed settings will not be able to connect. -The field for entering WEP keys currently allows the entry of more characters than required. It is therefore necessary to make sure that the proper number of characters for the key desired are entered. For 40 bit WEP, 10 characters should be entered; for 128 bit WEP, 26 characters should be used. WEP key values must be comprised of valid hexadecimal digits (0-9 and A-F), and spaces must NOT be used. -It is recommended that power saving features on client adapters (Wireless PC cards) be turned off. If Wireless PC cards have power saving features enabled and the card goes into sleep more, the APWE will lock up. In such cases a physical reset of the Access Point will then be required to restore functionality. -It is recommended that power saving features on wireless PDA or handheld clients be disabled. If a PDA or handheld has power saving features enabled and goes into sleep mode, the APWE will lock up. In such cases a physical reset of the Access Point will then be required to restore functionality. Reset functions --------------- The recessed Reset button to the left of the RJ-45 connector at the end of the Wireless Ethernet Access Point can be used to unlock the Access Point for SNMP monitoring or to perform two levels of reset, depending on how long the button is depressed. To depress the reset button, insert the end of a paper clip into the Reset button pinhole and push in gently. Continue to push in the button for the approximate length of time below to trigger the events described (numerical values are given in seconds): 1-2 sec: Will "Unlock" the Access Point to make it available for SNMP network management, after having locked it with the Lock button on the WLAN Security tab in the Access Point Manager. 10-15 sec: Resets the Access Point to factory settings (hard reset) for IP address, network ID, security level and key. The ACTIVITY light on the top of the unit will cycle on, and then will go off until the reset button is released. More than Resets the connection to the wired LAN. The 15 sec: ACTIVITY light on the top of the unit will cycle on, and then will go off until the reset button is released. The LINK light above the Reset pinhole will cycle off and on after the Reset button is released. If the Reset button is pressed for longer than 15 seconds the Access Point will be reset to factory default settings. 4) TECHNICAL SUPPORT ================= ============================================== TECHNICAL SUPPORT ============================================== XIRCOM AMERICAS (North and South America): ---------------------------------------------- Web Support..... http://www.xircom.com/support Email Support... http://www.xircom.com/support (click Online Support Request) Phone Support............... +1 (916) 377-7000 Phone Hours.. 7:00 am TO 5:00 pm, Mon-Fri, PST Fax Support................. +1 (805) 376-9100 Warranty Replacement........ +1 (805) 376-9200 Shop Xircom Support......... +1 (888) 576-9700 ---------------------------------------------- Latin American Support ..... +1 (805) 375-8117 Phone Hours ..7:00 am to 4:00 pm, Mon-Fri, PST ---------------------------------------------- XIRCOM EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa): ---------------------------------------------- Web Support..... http://www.xircom.com Email Support... http://www.xircom.com/support (click Online Support Request) Phone Support: http://www.intel.com/support/9089.htm Phone Hours...... 08:30 to 16:00, Mon-Fri, (UK Time) Phone Support: Belgium 02 714 3182 Denmark 38 487077 Finland 9 693 79297 France (33)(0)1-41-91-85-29 Germany (49)(0)69-9509-6099 Holland 020 487 4562 Italy (39) (0) 2-696-33276 Norway 23 1620 50 Spain (34) 91 377 8166 Sweden 08 445 1251 United Kingdom (44)(0)870-607-2439 For Warranty Replacement issues, please return the product to the place of purchase. ---------------------------------------------- XIRCOM APAC (Asia Pacific/Australia/New Zealand): ---------------------------------------------- Web Support..... http://www.xircom.com/support Email Support... http://www.xircom.com/support (click Online Support Request) Phone Support (Monday - Friday) Australia (1800) 649-931 09:00 to 17:00 (Sydney time) Hong Kong (852) 2 844-4456 09:00 to 17:00 (Hong Kong time) Korea (822) 767-2595 09:00 to 17:00 (Seoul time) Singapore (65) 213-1311 09:00 to 17:00 (Singapore time) Taiwan 2 2718 9915 09:00 to 17:00 (Taiwan time) China (800) 820-1100 09:00 to 17:00 (China time) Malaysia (1800) 80-1390 09:00 to 17:00 (Malaysia time) New Zealand (0800) 444-365 11:00 to 17:00 (New Zealand time) Philippines (1800) 1-651-0117 09:00 to 17:00 (Manila time) Indonesia (803) 65-7249 09:00 to 16:00 (Indonesia time) Thailand (800) 6310003 09:00 to 16:00 (Thailand time) Pakistan (via Philippines) (63) 2-636-8415 09:00 to 16:30 (Pakistan time) Vietnam (via Philippines) (63) 2-636-8416 09:00 to 16:00 (Vietnam time) India (0006517) 830-3634 Manual toll free.
