K56 technology enables speeds up to 56Kbps when data is downloaded. Upstream data sent from the user travels at the standard V.34 rate. Although the card will reconnect automatically, there was a minimal risk of data loss, depending upon when the drop occurred and how certain applications cope with a sudden loss of connection and slow recovery time. This driver delays reporting an incorrect link loss for a user configurable time period while re-detecting link, avoiding unnecessary network disconnects.
