Cabrillo Chassis Hot Swap Backplane Controller (HSC) Firmware Version 0.63 (Bootblock Version 0.20) Release Notes - July 30, 1999 Introduction. This document applies to the firmware used in the Intel Cabrillo-C server chassis hot swap SCSI backplane. At the time of release, this firmware supports two Intel server baseboards, the SC450NX (Sitka) and the C440GX+ (Cypress). *** WARNING *** Do NOT upgrade the C440GX+ (Cypress) server BIOS to version 4.0 or later without following the instructions in this document. There is a serious issue regarding the use of HSC firmware in conjunction with the Cypress baseboard BIOS version 4.0 and later. Cypress users are urged to read the dependencies section before upgrading either the BIOS or the HSC firmware. This warning does NOT apply to the Sitka baseboard. A note about DCS numbers. The DCS numbers used in this document refer to Intel's internal defect tracking database. These numbers are generally not meaningful outside of Intel, they are included in these release notes as part of Intel's tracking and correction process. Changes since previous version (HSC 0.62). 1. Fixed DCS 18134. SCSI BIOS hangs when warm booting windows. Changes since previous version (HSC 0.61). The following performance improvements have been made: 1. The SCSI selection time has been reduced from approximately 200 milliseconds to approximately 30 microseconds. 2. The time required for SCSI phase changes has been reduced from approximately 2 milliseconds to approximately 500 microseconds. 3. The HSC now transfers SCSI management information and commands to and from the host controller approximately 4X faster than previous versions. Note that this does not affect the speed of file transfer to and from the drives except for the fact that the SCSI BIOS will spend less time talking to the HSC during such transfers. 4. Several errors in clocking data to/from the host were corrected, as was handling of timeout errors. This change resolves Sitka DCS 16137 and Cypress DCS 17876. Dependencies. SC450NX (Sitka): No dependencies are known. This firmware was tested in conjunction with Sitka BMC firmware version 0.28 and BIOS 10. This firmware should also work well with BMC 0.27. C440GX+ (Cypress): Cypress BIOS version 4.0 and later incorporates a new version of the Adaptec SCSI BIOS for the on-board SCSI controller. This SCSI BIOS is incompatible with prior versions of the hot swap controller firmware. If the BIOS is upgraded to version 4.0 or later while running any version of HSC firmware prior to 0.62, the server will not boot after the BIOS upgrade if any drives are present in the hot swap bay. Users must first flash in the HSC 0.62 firmware and then flash the BIOS up to version 4.0 or later. No other dependencies are known. This firmware was tested in conjunction with Cypress BMC firmware version 1.04 and BIOS 4.0. Cabrillo HSC firmware release history. Note: There were no versions 0.56 through 0.60 of the Cabrillo HSC firmware. The jump in version numbers is due to shared code with other HSC products. HSC Version 0.61 (Bootblock version 0.20), July 16, 1998: DCS 12723: The slot LEDs can blink at a fast or slow rate to indicate various conditions. Originally "slow" was approximately 1 Hz and "fast" was 2 Hz. The fast rate has been increased to 3 Hz to make it more obvious to the user. DCS 13284: The HSC was spending approximately 200 milliseconds in the Message In phase before going to Bus Free. This time was reduced to approximately 2-3 milliseconds. The I2C bus communication code was upgraded to avoid a potential loss of messages when the I2C retry was set to 0. No known cases of these problems have been documented for this firmware, this is a precautionary upgrade only. HSC Version 0.55 (Bootblock version 0.20), May 28, 1998: DCS 12724: The HSC was handling the SAF-TE "Unconfigured Flag" (Write Device Slot Status command, byte 0, bit 7) incorrectly. The HSC would set this bit even when a drive was prepared for operation. The HSC now only sets this bit when a drive is inserted.
