See the "Important Note" under the Important Installation Notes area below. ============================================================================= SYSTEM HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS/REVISIONS ============================================================================= Server Board with PC87431M mini-Baseboard Managment Controler (mBMC) from National Semiconductor ============================================================================= SYSTEM SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS/REVISIONS ============================================================================= - PC87431M mini-Baseboard Managment Controler (mBMC) from National Semiconductor: Firmware Revision 2.40 - Latest HSC (SCSI or SATA) backplane firmware. - Latest FRU/SDR package. ============================================================================= IMPORTANT INSTALLATION NOTES ============================================================================= This package does not support mBMC updates while the Intel(R) Management Module Professional or Advnaced Editions are installed. WARNING: You must power cycle this server after completing the BMC update. Power cycle means you must remove the power (source) from the server for a minimum of 1-minute after completing the BMC update. Once done, then it is OK to use the FRUSDR utility. - The following files are necessary to update the firmware: run.bat - Batch file used to update the firmware m431_240.hex mfwu_240.hex - mBMC 2.40 firmware hex files for the platform FWPIAUpd.exe - DOS utility rev 2.0.1 PR2 which programs the firmware hex file into the flash device. Prior versions of this utility will not work with this FW Executing the fwpiaupd utility with your own command switches is unsupported and may leave your baseboard in a non-operational state! Please use the provided batch file to update the firmware. IMPORTANT NOTE: FAILURE TO FIRST UPDATE THE HOT SWAP CONTROLLER (HSC) ON THE HOT SWAP BACKPLANE (HSBP), EITHER SCSI or SATA, MAY RESULT IN A mBMC UPDATE FAILURE OR A BOARD FAILURE. ENSURE THAT THE HSC CONTAINS THE REQUIRED FIRMWARE REVISION LISTED BELOW BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE mBMC UPDATE. Required HSBP backplane firmware operational code revisions: SC1400/SC2400 SATA - 1.08 or higher SCSI - 1.06 or higher SC5300/SC5275E 6 Drive SATA - 1.08 or higher 4 Drive SCSI - 1.12 or higher 6 Drive SCSI - 1.12 or higher The following command can be used to check for the current version of HSC firmware. "fwpiaupd -i -dirhsc". Both the Op Code and Boot Block code versions will be displayed. It is the Op Code that is shown above for version comparison. ============================================================================= INSTALLATION PROCEDURE ============================================================================= - Validate that the server board is a mBMC based system without an Intel(R) Management Module installed. This package does not support mBMC updates while the Intel Management Module is installed. Removal of the module is required before proceeding with the mBMC update. - Validate that the HSC fimrware is either at or higher in the revisions listed above. - Execute the run.bat file to begin the firmware update process - Cycle AC power after the update - Proceed to install the latest FRU/SDR package. - Reinstall Intel Management Module if previously installed. ============================================================================= KNOWN ISSUES/WORKAROUNDS ============================================================================= ============================================================================= FEATURES ADDED ============================================================================= This is release of the 2.40 package which contains a robust version of the FWPIAUPD.exe utility for mBMC firmware updating capabilities. ============================================================================= REFERENCE MATERIAL ============================================================================= N/A ============================================================================= ISSUES RESOLVED ============================================================================= It is not possible, at this time, to include in this readme document the changes that were implemented between v2.31 and 2.40. For resellers and OEM customers who have access to the secure Intel Business Link (IBL) web site, a confidential National Semiconductor Corporation document is posted which outlines the changes. This information cannot be supplied via email, hardcopy or electronic format other than IBL. [END OF RELEASE NOTES]
